One of the few things you can't control - a rainy wedding day

While posting K+J's pictures I started to reminisce about that day. While getting K ready, the forecast changed from clear skies to rain, rain and more rain. We tried to rush to get pictures done before the skies opened up but no such luck, we had to shoot in the rain. And although we didn't miss the rain, we did get the next best thing...a super-relaxed, go-with-the-flow couple and wedding party.

This made me want to get on here and blog about how, while there's lots of things to stress about, the weather isn't one of them. Why? Well honestly, because there isn't a darn thing you can do about it!!!

Now, before you start thinking about how it's easy for me to say that because it's not my wedding, listen - I am a survior of a rainy day wedding! And my ceremony was outside! So trust me, I've been there - and there's nothing you can do about it. So, although it is disheartening and upsetting, if it decides to rain on your wedding day just try to relax and go with the flow.

Honestly, some of my favorite pictures have been done in the rain. Both of these were shot by Kortnee Kate Photography and are among my top fave shots of all time {I'm biased, the second one is currently blown up and famed over my bed. No sillies, it's not a client! It's me and Rick. That would be a little creepy...}

Some more eye candy to reiterate just how amazing rainy photos can be

Great rainy pictures aren't only limited to a light sprinkle...

And I now believe that no wedding album is complete without a gorgeous gown and rain boots. I mean really? Everyone needs rain boots - bridesmaids gift???

Perhaps a monogrammed umbrella..yep, definitely a monogrammed umbrella ;)

So let this be the one thing you let go of and just relax. Spend your time on other things you can control, like buying your girls new galoshes. Nobody can control the weather, not even a meteorologist.

P.S. I'm a size 8 ;)

and I can't resist posting these. Awww memories...

The Plunge - a site for grooms!

So much of the wedding market is geared to the bride it's refreshing to see something for the men. ThePlunge.com is a site where men can get real advice about weddings - whether they're contemplating engagement, committed to taking "the plunge," or even just a groomsman. It gives readers an unconventional, unflinchingly honest perspective on the entire wedding process, which can be quite amusing.

The site dispenses tips and advice on buying the ring and getting engaged to wedding planning, bachelor parties and booking the honeymoon. Additional features include an interactive forum for guys to swap advice, an "Ask The Expert" feature where users can mail their question to the editors, weekly polls and a monthly Plunge newsletter.

Forward this to the man in your life and help him feel empowered about the big day. However, I'm not responsible for any smart remarks he gets from his time spent there...

I got lost on the site for hours! Here are a couple of the lists that caught my eye:

  • Thank Yous
  • Thank the In-Laws.
  • Thank your parents.
  • Thank the wedding party.
  • Thank your wife.
  • Thanks the In-Laws again.
  • Avoiding Early Wife Strife
  • Tell her she looks beautiful.
  • Tell her again.
  • Don't drift too far apart.
  • Only shove frosting in her face if she's given you the green light.
  • Not Passing Out
  • Eat before you greet all your guests.
  • Drink lots of water.
  • In advance, arrange for food to be brought back to your hotel room.
  • Things to bring
  • Powerbar
  • Tissues, for your tears
  • Cash (for tipping vendors)
  • Spare undershirt (in case you're sweating)
  • Vendor contracts
  • Well-trained liver
  • Directions to reception
  • ** note - if you have me and Rick you can forget about the tips, tissues and contracts - we'll have those on hand for you
  • General Responsibilities
  • Give a speech thanking the above.
  • Make sure the Best Man isn't sh$tfaced before he gets the mic.
  • Talk to every single guest. Literally every single one.
  • Stay until at least 11pm.
  • Keep up your defenses against the In-Laws.
  • Mingle with the shmucks you hate.
  • Toss the garter.
All kidding aside there are some very useful tips on the site. Plus it gives you a little insight into the male mind..it's a very scary place......happy reading Y

Damask Lamps

So many people have emailed asking about the damask lamps. No, this is not my wedding {though I wish it was!!} and no, I didn't design it. My best advice if you like this look is to purchase some damask lamp shades or make your own! DIY instructions are below. Or buy one ready-made at target ;) Hope this helps a little!

DIY

Materials:
black candle stick (Hobby Lobby has a lot of them)
13x13 damask print paper/fabric
a similar shape lamp shade (ikea has some)

Instructions:
Wrap the paper/fabric around the lampshade and secure with spray on glue or glue gun
The lamp shade should have a ring at the bottom so you can glue it to the candlestick

You can find better, in-depth instructions here and step-by-step instructions for the damask with pictures here.

Industry Perspective: The Cost of Photography

I was perusing some of my favorite blogs and ran across Mark Garber's site for Red Haute Designs. The post cited an article written by Shawn Richter {posted on facebook by photographer Allen Mueller} about the cost of photography. You can find the full article here but I put a sampling below. Thanks to Mark and Jennifer for educating us!

Why are Professional Photographers so expensive?

In this digital age where everyone has digital cameras, scanners and home "photo printers", when people upload their photos to a local drug store website and pick them up a few hours later, we hear this all the time - How in the world do Professional Photographers charge $55 (actually more then what I charge) for an 8x10 when they cost just $1.50 at the drug store?

Here's why. Simply put, you're not just paying for the actual photograph, you're paying for time and expertise. First, let's look at the actual time involved. If you don't read this entire page, at least read this first part. For a two hour portrait session:
- one hour of travel to and from the session
- two hours of shooting
- 30 minutes of setup, preparation, talking to the client etc.
- 30 minutes to load the photos onto a computer (2 - 4 Gb of data)
- 30 minutes to back up the files on an external drive
- 3 - 4 hours of Photoshop time including cropping, contrast, color, sharpening, saving a copy for print and a copy for the internet and backing up the edited photographs
- 2 - 3 hours to talk to the client, answer questions, receive their order and payment, order their prints, receive and verify prints, package prints, schedule shipment and drop package off at Fed Ex.
- For local customers, we also print a set of all of their photos, and meet them at our studio to review the photos and place their order. Meeting and travel time averages 2 hours. You can see how one two hour session easily turns into more than ten hours of work from start to finish.

So when you see a Photographer charging a $200 session fee for a two hour photo shoot, you are not paying them $100 / hour.

For an eight hour wedding:
I won't bore you with the details, but an eight hour wedding typically amounts to at least two to three full 40 hour work weeks worth of time.

Again, if they are charging you $4,000 for an eight hour wedding, you are not paying them $500 / hour. Now for the expertise. Shooting professional photography is a skill, acquired through years of experience. Even though a quality camera now costs under $2,000 taking professional portraits involves much more than a nice camera.

Most Professional Photographers take years to go from buying their first decent camera to making money with their photography. In addition to learning how to use the camera itself, there is a mountain of other equipment involved, as well as numerous software programs used to edit and print photographs, run a website etc. And let's not forget that you actually have to have people skills, be able to communicate, make people comfortable in front of the camera - and posing people to make them look their best in a photograph is a skill all by itself.

Think of it this way - the next time you pay $X to get your hair done, a pair of scissors only costs $1.50. But you gladly pay a lot more to hire a Professional. What about the cheap studios at the mall? Please don't compare us to the chain store studios. But if you must, consider all of the time and work that we put into our photographs, compared to what they do. Good luck getting a two hour photo shoot at a chain store. Not to mention they won't come to the beach! And of course, look at our work compared to theirs. You get what you pay for.

The truth is, most of the mall and chain store studios lose money. In fact, in 2007 Wal-Mart closed 500 of their portrait studios because of the financial drain they were putting on the company. What the chain stores bet on is that you'll come in for some quick and cheap photos, and while you're there, you'll also spend $200 on other things. They don't have to make money, they are just there to get you in the door.

Conclusion: We hope that those who have taken the time to read this page will have a better understanding of why professional photographs cost so much more than the ones that you get from your local drug store. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Needless to say there were some great comments including, "Don't forget about the $15-20k worth of equipment it takes to do the session and editing/artworking."
I'd love to hear some thoughts from our loved Cincy photogs! C'mon...leave me a comment!!

The Cost of Weddings {By Liene Stevens}

I interrupt real TC weddings to bring you this important message:

Two years ago the fabulous Liene Stevens of Blue Orchid Designs wrote this:

But it's just some pretty paper: Invitations
A good rule of thumb when budgeting for invitations is this: a decent (read: nice quality, but not necessarily elaborate) invitation should cost around the same price as a greeting card. If you want a custom invitation, you can expect to pay more because you are compensating the artist for her designs, proofs, revisions and edits, assembly and general labor.

All you're doing is pushing a button: Photography & Videography
Photography can easily be one of the most spendy parts of the wedding and for good reason - when all is said and done, that is what you will have left. Also, the final product usually doesn't come out of the camera ready to go - a lot of behind-the-scenes editing and design goes into producing great photos. If you're having video, you can count on hours of editing, including finding the right moments to splice things in, cueing the appropriate music to match, etc.

So you're like JLo in that movie: Wedding Planners
No, I'm not like JLo and wow, did she make my job look easy! Hollywood has a knack for doing that though, don't they? The biggest thing you are paying the planner for is her time - the average wedding takes more than 250 hours to plan and there are only 52 weekends in a year. Both of these facts limit how much we can take on and commit to. It may seem like you are paying the planner for one day, but in reality 250 hours translates into more than six 40-hour work weeks. And that's just for your normal, run-of-the-mill wedding. If you want something unique and special, even more time is involved.

They are just going to die tomorrow anyway: Flowers
When purchasing flowers, you are paying for so many things - the grower's cut (planting, growing, watering, feeding, harvesting), the packaging and shipping of them in a manner that they will not wilt or die on the way to your location, and then the florist's fees (design, watering, prepping them with special concoctions that prolong their lifespan, arranging, delivering, etc).

The time-tested adage "you get what you pay for" has been proven over and over again with weddings. You don't need to break the bank on your wedding or try to keep up with the Joneses - but it is important to go into the wedding planning process with an understanding of where your money is going so that you can best prioritize its use.

Posted by Liene Stevens

Earlier this month she posted a follow up post - you can find it here.

So wedding planners are not only working 12 hours on the wedding day but up to 250 hours before! Even 'day of coordinators' work way more than those 12 hours - I average at least 40 hours on emails, phone calls and meetings per 'day of'wedding. Because that's what it takes to have an event be successful and that's why you hired us!

Just sayin'... :) Happy 4th!

In My Humble Opinion....

I get this question a lot: "Do I really need to hire a makeup artist? Can't I do it myself or {gasp} just go to the mall makeup counter?"

Well absolutely you can! (like I'm going to tell you that you can't do something...) But in my professional opinion - I do not recommend it. Period.

The fact is, you have spent months planning this event down to the very last detail. Why wouldn't you give yourself the same treatment you've given everything else? Not only do makeup artists understand how different colors and techniques will look best on you but they also know how lighting and shadows will how appear in your photographs. This alone should be enough to hire a professional! These are your memories we're talking about - not a thing to skimp on :)

We're really lucky here in Cincinnati to have some fabulous makeup artists available for house calls - definitely check out Nancy with Brideface and Heidi McKenna {mckenna@fuse.net}, these 2 ladies are fabulous!

You are the bride, the star of the day! Treat yourself as such. And I mean really, when else will you be able to have your own beauty crew?!

{If your so inclined - here's a great article about makeup and lighting}

I found this during one of my etsy binges. I think it's a fantastic idea. While we all have the intention of converting our handwritten notes (from showers, etc.) somehow something always gets lost in translation. If only I had this 2 years ago.....
