Here we go..our first weekly feature!

Introducing......Nancy D. with Brideface!
Photo Credit: {TM Photography}

Company Name:
Brideface {Blog}

Location: Covington/The Bridal Studio; 714 Madison

Type of Vendor: on location professional makeup artistry
Number of Years in Business: four

How did you get started in the wedding industry? I have been a makeup artist for 13 years and always considered weddings my favorite medium. I took the plunge so I could be own boss, spend more time with my kids, and do what I love.

How did you pick your company name? I don't remember agonizing over it; I just wanted something easy to remember that would be timeless and I knew I didn't want my name in the title. I got mixed reactions to it at first but I loved it right away.

If you had to start over what one thing would you do differently? I would have started my company ten years ago if I had known then that it was possible to make a living at it.

What is your company philosophy? We want our clients to feel like a pampered celebrity and the most beautiful they have have ever been. {love that!}

What's one thing you want clients/vendors to know most about your services? For myself and the three makeup artists that work with me, this is our full time occupation, not something we just do on the side. We take what we do very seriously and invest heavily in the products we use and in continuing education. We live and breathe weddings!

Do you have any hidden talents or favorite hobbies? I studied flute performance at CCM and also have a background in musical theatre.

What are your three favorite blogs besides The Tres Chic Bride?
Style Me Pretty, Jezebel and Design Sponge
And here's some examples of their fabulous work:

Carrie & Ryan

Ceremony: St. Cecilia
Reception: Cincinnati Club - Harrison Room
Photographer: Bluebird Photography
Makeup Artist: Brideface

I truly adore all of our TC couples. We have been extremely fortunate to have worked with very sweet, loving and kind people, most importantly, they have all been focused on the fact that their wedding is about the union of marriage - not just a big party. Carrie and Ryan might have been the cutest couple to date. Ryan is goofy yet focused and Carrie is super intelligent and so in love with Ryan. They look at each other with such a look of love and balance each other to perfection. It's such an honor to be able to witness couples like that - to be invited to share in their day. Makes me smile :)

Fabulous vendors with this wedding - St. Cecilia Parish is one of my favorite churches (although there will be no more lining the aisle with anything) and I totally heart Cincinnati Club - they are fabulous. April with Bluebird is an amazing photog - she is creative and so relaxed, something that definitely comes in handy on a crazy day. I pulled the above pics from her  blog so jump over there and see them in all their glory. This was the first wedding we've gotten to work with Katie Elfers and we were super impressed. I didn't get a lot of my own pictures (and what I did get isn't very good!) but what I did get is below. I loved the centerpieces from this wedding - Katie totally captured Carrie's vision of a winter wedding. Its was gorgeous! We have another event with Katie in March that is going to be uber-fabulous (hi Heather!) and we're so excited about it! I promise to take more pics!

Ok onto the {not so}fab pics!

The cake was yummy! Super moist and tasty.

I know it looks bare in these photos - this is from the morning set up - but once the tables were set it looked amazing. The room was cozy and inviting but elegant at the same time.

Funny story time - we had to slip in an extra seat for the priest and we didn't have a chair cover. We called the company several times but never got a call back {bad for business} so Rick dove into the emergency kit and fashioned a fab chair cover out of a Cincy Club linen. Couldn't even tell. He's the best :)

Food Stations

You all know that I always like to have a little 'extra' at each event - something that makes each reception memorable and personal. As I was thinking about this today I thought that an easy way to do this is through something we all love and need - Food! We know that our memories are strongly triggered by sight, taste and smell so it only makes sense that using some of your favorite foods would lend a special touch that's uniquely you. To take it a step further set up several food stations around the room - this not only feeds the guests (a necessity) but also gives your guests something to do (something they'll appreciate!).

Here's some examples of food stations that I would love as a guest at an event:

Pasta Bar--A variety of pastas, both cold and hot. Go one step further and have a chef on hand to cook made-to-order pasta dishes.

Perogie Bar--offer a variety of perogies stuffed with mashed potatoes, potato and cheddar or feta with great toppings like bacon bits, diced onions, sour cream and chives.

Asian Cuisine--dim sum station, spring rolls, pan-fried dumplings, chicken or beef satay and different rice and noodle dishes.

Gourmet Macaroni and Cheese Station--offer grandma's secret recipe mac-n-cheese along with the more haute mac: caramelized sweet potato macaroni and cheese, cornbread-topped apple macaroni and cheese or 5-cheese macaroni and cheese. Offer the same tasty toppings as the perogie bar. Print the recipes on cocktail napkins for another layer of personalization

Seafood Bar--Expensive but delicious: oysters, jumbo shrimp cocktail, sushi rolls, smoked salmon and crab salad.

How about Mexican cuisine, Mediterranean Station, Soup Bar, Expresso Bar or an Ice Cream Bar? As I always say, the possibilities are endless.

My favorite? Anything at the end of the night to help soak up all that alcohol - Gold Star or Skyline, coffee and Donuts, milk and cookies..you get the point :)

In My Humble Opinion....

I get this question a lot: "Do I really need to hire a makeup artist? Can't I do it myself or {gasp} just go to the mall makeup counter?"

Well absolutely you can! (like I'm going to tell you that you can't do something...) But in my professional opinion - I do not recommend it. Period.

The fact is, you have spent months planning this event down to the very last detail. Why wouldn't you give yourself the same treatment you've given everything else? Not only do makeup artists understand how different colors and techniques will look best on you but they also know how lighting and shadows will how appear in your photographs. This alone should be enough to hire a professional! These are your memories we're talking about - not a thing to skimp on :)

We're really lucky here in Cincinnati to have some fabulous makeup artists available for house calls - definitely check out Nancy with Brideface and Heidi McKenna {mckenna@fuse.net}, these 2 ladies are fabulous!

You are the bride, the star of the day! Treat yourself as such. And I mean really, when else will you be able to have your own beauty crew?!

{If your so inclined - here's a great article about makeup and lighting}

Meet The Vendors

Since starting Tres Chic in 2007 Rick and I have had the honor of meeting so many fabulous people in and around Cincinnati. It really is those relationships that allow us to bring our clients the very best service possible. So in honor of our great vendor friends I thought I would create our very first weekly feature - Meet The Vendors.

Check back often to meet some of the amazing people that make things happen.
To be fair I thought I would kick this off by answering my own questions. Not as a {shameless} plug but so you can get to know me just a little bit better.

Name: Kristen N. Kloth {and Rick!}

Location: Cincinnati, Ohio

Company Name:
Tres Chic Event Planning

Type of Vendor: Event Coordinator

Number of Years in Business: 1.5

How did you get started in the wedding industry? After coordinating weddings as favors several vendors I was working with asked me to come work for them. I figured if someone wanted to pay me to do it then I could do it myself! It literally took off from there and has kept us very busy!

How did you pick your company name? I wanted something that incorporated my love for fashion and design without sounding cheesy. I have always been infatuated with all things French and 'chic' has always been my favorite adjective so it just clicked! Tres Chic = Very Stylish. Love it!

If you had to start over what one thing would you do differently? I would have started sooner and raised my pricing. Sorry, we're being honest here ;) I would also have had more confidence in myself and my abilities.

What is your company philosophy? Every couple deserves 'friend' in the industry. No matter the budget or guest list, every client gets the personal attention they need. We're also very budget conscience, Chanel style on a target budget :)

What's one thing you want clients/vendors to know most about your services? Please please please hire a wedding coordinator. A
site coordinator is not an event coordinator. The site coordinator is there to make sure their space is respected and taken care of. Your event coordinator is there to do make sure the couple (and their families) are respected and taken care of. Big difference!

Do you have any hidden talents or favorite hobbies? I'm a huge history dork and I love to shop for other people. I would totally be a stylist if I had the time!

What are your three favorite blogs besides The Tres Chic Bride?
Green Wedding Shoes, Bobbi + Mike and The Treasured Petal.

Fabulous Finds - Creative Montage

I found Creative Montage by way of their post on the new blog for Eventology event I'll be attending in April. They are a sponsor for the event so I mosied on over to the website and fell in love. Granted, I love all things paper so I'm an easy sell BUT I do have high expectations so they only make a post if I think their really special :)

I {love} their work! Check out their site, blog and etsy store for your paper needs.

The Marie Collection: This is a fantastic example of how all your paper elements can go together but not 'match'. From the invite to the menus everything just flows...{Side note: the price per invite will knock you over. In a good way!}

Boys and The Bouts...

So I definitley prefer the look of a pocket square over the traditional boutonnierers but if we're going to flower route I adore modern designs with cleanly wrapped stems that maintain a masculine look while still being all about beauty. Remember you don't have to have a single rose! The possibilities are endless. All I ask is that you keep in mind that these little buds are going to get a lot of action - lots of hugging which means they've got to be tough! Nothing looks worse than a wilted flower pinned on your new hubby in all your reception photos. Just Sayin'...

I love the color and texture of these bouts. Stunning!

You Need a Wedding Magazine....

Don't forget - Barnes and Nobles will be donating a portion of each purchase to The Kari Rosenberg Scholarship Foundation when you give them the voucher number 45033.

Please try to go! You know you need another wedding book/magazine...my favorite is Inside Weddings. It's for a good cause!

Please and Thank You!

Who Says Vanilla is Plain?!

With a focus on contemporary design and taste the Vanilla Bake Shop is quickly climbing it's way up my favorite list! Aside from the gorgeous designs, it is run by a husband and wife team - love that! After graduating culinary school, they started a dessert catering company. After such great feedback, they opened Vanilla Bake Shop. The name was concocted years ago in culinary school. Story is while in class one day, her instructor told her that "Vanilla was the worlds most universally loved flavor." We knew when the time was right, that would be thLinke name of our bake shop. Look at that storefront in Santa Monica - damask!

Vanilla Bake Shop bakes cakes, cupcakes, mini cupcakes, and lots of other sweets! They have some amazing flavors such as: Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla Bean Cake, Red Velvet, Passion Fruit Creme, Carrot Cake, Espresso and cupcakes also flavors such as Key Lime, Blackberry Passion Fruit, Strawberries & Creme, and Toasted Coconut. I know flying your cake in from Cali is probably out of question but they do ship cupcakes and cupcake babies! Here's some design inspiration but definitely check out their site for more pics!

Inspiration Made Easy

The Inspiration Board, a visual representation of the elements and feeling that represents your dream wedding. Style Me Pretty started this trend and made it look so easy, but let's face it, unless you have photoshop or another program like it creating one can prove more difficult than originally anticipated. But have no fear I have found you an alternative! There is a fabulous place where you can bring all your ideas together easily and beautifully - Bridal Canvas.

Once at their site, Bridal Canvas gives you the tools to create your very own inspiration board like the one above. They post other member’s boards, so it’s a great way to get some new ideas, and see some interesting combinations to help you think outside of the box! Be sure to check out their “pro” section as well to see what event professionals are up to! After spending all that time on your own masterpiece send it over to me and we'll post some of our readers' Bridal Canvas' :)

Here's just a few more to get those creative juices flowin'!

NWR - Beauty on the Brain

I know I know, another NWR post - but it's educating! And that makes it ok....at least in my eyes - if not, post and let me know and I'll keep it strictly WR!  :)

I am shamelessly sharing this information from the fab 'faking good breeding' blog. I'm somewhat of a fashion/makeup junkie and loved this post so I wanted to share. The blog isn't active anymore but it has some great posts and I got lost in it for an hour. Thanks Meg for sharing your insight!

Beauty Industry: Who Owns What?

Aside from recognizing that they're all beauty brands, you probably don't often link Kiehl's, Maybelline and La Roche-Posay. Or Olay, Covergirl and SK-II. Or La Mer, MAC and Clinique. Each of these brands has a very clear, unique identity that is defined by what kind of products they make, where they're sold, how they're priced, what kind of person buys them, how they're packaged, and a number of other factors.

But that's only because the marketers behind these major brands have been so successful in conditioning consumers to think about the brand in these terms. What we're encouraged to ignore is that each of these brand groupings is owned by the same corporation. Kiehl's, Maybelline and La Roche-Posay couldn't be more different brands, but they're all owned and produced by L'Oreal. Same goes for Olay, Covergirl and SK-II, all Proctor & Gamble brands. And if you thought that Estee Lauder was only a department store makeup brand, you might be surprised to learn that the company owns 27 beauty brands, including La Mer, MAC and Clinique.

The beauty industry is dominated by a few key players, all multi-billion dollar corporations with ownership over multiple major brands. Here's how it breaks down:

L'Oreal: 2005 revenues of $19.78 billion U.S. dollars. Only owns cosmetics, haircare and fragrance brands (29 in total).

Brands: Kérastase, L'Oréal Professionnel, L'Oréal Technique, Matrix, Mizani, Redken, L'Oréal Paris, Garnier, Maybelline New York, SoftSheen-Carson, Biotherm, The Body Shop, Cacharel, Diesel Perfumes, Giorgio Armani Parfums and Cosmetics, Guy Laroche, Helena Rubinstein, Kiehl's, Lancôme, Paloma Picasso, Ralph Lauren, Shu Uemura, Victor et Rolf parfum, Dermablend, La Roche-Posay, SkinCeuticals, Vichy Laboratoires, Innéov, Ombrelle.

Proctor & Gamble: 2006 revenues of $68.222 billion U.S. dollars (this includes all brands). Beauty sales alone equaled $21.1 billion. P&G sells many different kinds of consumer products (their brands range from Tide to Gillette to Pampers to Iams to Tampax and many, many more). You can read the entire list here

Beauty brands: Gillette, Head & Shoulders, Olay, Pantene, Wella, Aussie, Clairol, CoverGirl, Herbal Essences, Infusium 23, Ivory Soap, Max Factor, Natural Instincts, Nice'n Easy, Noxzema, Secret, SK-II, Vidal Sassoon.

Estee Lauder: 2006 revenues of $6.746 billion U.S. dollars. Only sells cosmetics, haircare and fragrance products.

Brands: American Beauty, Aramis, Aveda, Bobbi Brown, Bumble and bumble, Clinique, Daisy Fuentes, Darphin, Donald Trump The Fragrance, Donna Karan, Estée Lauder, Flirt!, Good Skin, Grassroots, Jo Malone, Lab Series, La Mer, Kiton, MAC Cosmetics, Michael Kors, MISSONI, Origins, Prescriptives, Rodan and Fields, Sean John, Tommy Hilfiger, Coach Fragrances.

Unilever: 2006 revenus of $53.97 billion U.S. dollars. Sells food, beverage, cleaning and personal care consumer products.

Beauty brands: Caress, Degree, Dove, Lever 2000, Pond's, Suave, Sunsilk, Vaseline.

Johnson & Johnson: 2006 revenues of $53 billion U.S. dollars. Manufactures consumer packaged goods, pharmaceuticals and medical devices.

Beauty brands: Aveeno, Clean and Clear, Neutrogena.

Avon: 2006 revenues of $8.1 billion U.S. dollars. Sells cosmetics, fragrances and some clothing and jewelry.

Beauty brands: Avon Color, Anew and Solutions, Skin So Soft and Naturals, Avon Fragrances, mark.

Certainly there are other important corporations that stand alone, such as Revlon (2006 revenues of $1.33 billion). But when you consider just how many brands are controlled by a few companies, it's pretty mindboggling.

So what good is this information and how does it useful to you as a consumer?

I've always argued that the more you know about beauty products and the beauty industry, the smarter your purchases will be. When you consider that the huge team of people doing research and development for L'Oreal are developing formulas that can be used in Garnier shampoo ($3.99) and Kerastase shampoo ($29.99), you realize that it's a good idea to start comparing products at different price points. Often two products from two different brands will have the same patent number (Pantene and Herbal Essence conditioners, for example). The difference is in the non-active ingredients, which give it a unique texture, scent, color, etc.

To double check on this, I e-mailed my two favorite cosmetics scientists, The Beauty Brains. They said that major companies (like the ones I've listed above) often save money by using the same formulas in multiple brands, which allows them to get price breaks on raw materials. Sometimes companies will use more expensive or better active ingredients in their luxury brands (the fact that they're active ingredients is key... they can spend all the money they want on fancy extracts and organic ingredients, but they won't make a difference in how the product works), but the truth is that more expensive formulas do not cost companies much more to create.

The price comes from the fact that you expect to pay a high price for a luxury brand. Don't you often automatically assume that a gorgeous bottle of $60 eye cream sold at a Saks counter is going to work better than the $1.99 tube on the clearance rack at CVS? It's all psychological.

So before you go and splurge on an expensive product, take the time to compare it to a similar product from one of their sister brands. Usually an online store (like Drugstore.com) will list the ingredients. You can then check out a site like The Beauty Brains or cosmetics cop Paula's Begoun, who has an ingredient dictionary and reviews of products. Makeup Alley is also a great resource, as you can read tons of reviews or ask questions to the extremely knowledgeable message board posters.

A Little Help for a Good Cause

In 2005 we lost one of our very best friends, Kari to a car accident on I75. We (my family) have known her family since before my sister, I or Kari were born, thus we saw ourselves more as sisters than friends. Somehow fate brought us together and we attended Ohio University together. We tried to take as many classes together as we could and always ended up having to cram our final projects together in one night. But we were hanging out so the hard work didn't bother us so much. We both loved OU with a deep passion and said we would always give back to the university. (OU alumni are slightly proud of their university....).

Anyway, Kari and I both graduated in 2003, me with my history degree and Kari with a BFA in graphic design. You see Kari was a phenomenal artist. After graduation she landed a fabulous job and was quickly making a name for herself in the art world. She sold tons of paintings and had gallery openings in New York City. Words can't really explain how losing her felt and still feels like today. I don't think you ever get over losing a friend, a sister.

SO back to the real reason for this post! We held a benefit after Kari's death and established an art scholarship fund at OU in her name. This is where you come in! On January 20th (Kari's Birthday, she'd be turning 29) Barnes and Nobles are donating a portion of each book purchase to her scholarship fund if you give them this voucher number: 454033.

This voucher can be used at any Barnes and Nobles (not just Ohio!) so if you were planning on purchasing any books please please do it on January 20th (Tuesday) and give them the voucher number 454033. If you do please leave a comment so I can acknowledge you! Thanks for listening! And make sure you don't take what you have for granted, one never knows what tomorrow will bring.

Just for fun - some of her art. She loved working with mixed media:

My favorite: one of her earliest pieces but I fancy myself a bit of a princess so this speaks to me. The image served as the background for our Save the Dates. Yep dork. Oh well...

More information: About Kari, the Kari Rosenberg OU Scholarship Fund, some of Kari's Art.

See ya on the flip side - mad love.

Whose Wedding is it Anyway?

So I'm home waiting for the plumber to show up (damn 100+ yr houses!) and I decided to catch up on my DVRed episodes of Whose Wedding is it Anyway. I  actually used to watch the show before TC came to be but honestly, I can barely get through an episode now.

Does anyone else watch this and think WTH? If I'm paying you $5k + you better come up with something better than this:

Nothing wrong with it per say but it doesn't make you gasp in delight. And I'm sure I'm offending someone out there (please accept my humble apology) but I mean, really?! You would have been better off putting that extra money into the tablescapes! All I can see are clouds of white with big blue bows. Oh and a plant somewhere in the middle there.

Since I am always so quick to share my opinion let me share this, I am also not a fan of 'scattered' petals. The table above everything going to make it a fab setting; beautiful linens, napkin treatments, chargers and pretty table numbers. But tell me, what the heck are the centerpieces? I can't even find them! Then throw in those petals and my eyes are so confused they hurt! This is a case of much too much going on. If I were the planner/coordinator I would have gently suggested narrowing our focus. Of course I would do whatever you wanted but...

So, can rose petals work? Absolutely, check out the images below in which the petals enhance the setting and don't detract from the focus. Notice, none have petals scattered all about - they are all contained and used en masse.

Anyway, that's just my opinion. It's not like I'm on national television or anything.....
